Welcome to the ECRPD web site

The EU project ECRPD, Energy Conservation in Road Pavement Design, Maintenance and Utilisation, started in January 2007 and was completed in January 2010.

About ECRPD
In December 2006 the Intelligent Energy Executive Agency (IEEA), acting under powers delegated by the European Communities, and the project coordinator, Waterford County Council, Ireland, signed an agreement on the ECRPD project.

The ECRPD project looked at evaluating energy conservation in pavement manufacture and placement i.e. low energy pavement materials and also in pavement maintenance on existing roads. In particular it will look at energy saving in road maintenance so as to save energy in vehicle use.

Benefits of the project
• Identification of energy use in existing road pavements in EU27
• Identification of energy use in new low energy road pavements
• Identification of energy efficiency in road maintenance
• Preserving road pavements in a condition that maximises the energy efficiency of vehicles using the road. This will be an energy saving for vehicles, which requires no action on the driver’s part and no need for legal enforcement.
